Nelson earlier had lost his eye, and during the battle of trafalgar literally turned a blind eye to orders from superior by putting the telescope on his damaged eyes and saying im not able to see the retreat orders. To commemorate his navies across the world don "Nelson's eye" on shoulder ranks.
